Building decks in Bethpage
Bethpage filled in during the Grumman years, so most of the hamlet is post-war capes, ranches and split-levels on regular suburban lots, many expanded over the decades. Because those lots are moderate, the design question is usually how much lawn to trade for the deck; we tend to keep the structure tight to the house and push the dining area to a corner to preserve open yard. On the splits, a two-tier deck that gives the kitchen door and the den door each their own landing is the common solution.
